When going in empopada we must distinguish if we took a stable wind or if it is turning. But also it can be oscillating changing to a side once in a while. The most complicated situation is when it oscillates but with tendency to turn. In addition we must conjugate all this with the different own strategies from the passages with tailwinds.

With the stern wind it happens something similar to which already we saw with headwinds. If after awhile the wind it turns we will be able to verify that following the side by which we have decided to lower to the leeward buoy we could be or not favored.
When beginning the section of windward, each different low boat on the one hand. Both boats have the same leeward ahead what nº of bars is translated by the same that to lower until arriving around the buoy. In order to understand it with more clarity we suppose that after awhile, the wind rola net to a side. Now we will see as the red boat is more about arriving around the leeward of the buoy that the blue boat.

In the end what there is to remember is that if the wind turns towards the right, we must lower by opposite side that is to say, by the left side, and vice versa. And the ideal will be to do it in two bordos only doing a unique one trasluchada. But this is the ideal since the tactics competing against other boats complica when covering itself the wind or to be avoided the crossings with other sailboats, as we see more ahead.

Some prefer not to approach the Laylines excessively reason why we must concentrate if our position is very lateral, although this will depend on how it is the stern wind. As well as when doing turned fitting the boat it can lose yield and speed, in the trasluchadas ones does not lose anything almost.
Others will prefer to follow the band that are doing and to avoid to trasluchar. But it remembers more that with stern winds the wind force is very important, than if some tendency exists to oscillate. What we must in any case is to watch our position with respect to the rest of the participants.
When we lowered towards a buoy of leeward but with oscillating winds, we must apply what we have seen until now, but considering that the correct side by that we must lower will be changing. That is to say, if the wind turns to the right we will lower by the left side, and when it oscillates to izquieda we will do it by the right. This way we will be little by little rascando distance in front of which they make the passage by a unique band. The question is in when we must trasluchar and change to the other side. For it is totally necessary to know what is the average direction of the wind, since we do not have to trasluchar as soon as the wind begins to oscillate to the other side, but when its direction has exceeded of the average direction from where it comes.

Logical! If the wind comes from North and oscillates little by little until going to 20º we must go by the left side. Now the wind begins to oscillate in opposite sense, of 20º that does until it comes from 340º, but we do not have to trasluchar until it returns to become North. In order to remove the average wind we must go writing down in each band the angles of where the wind comes to each side and to remove the average position.

And when the wind oscillates but in addition it has a tendency to be turning, we must consider this tendency to go a little more time to the opposite band and to take advantage of to the maximum the advantages the oscillations and the tendency to turn. Far from easy!
When we haggled making the section of tailwind the boat goes very comfortable and is easy to forget that some small adjustments can give like result improvements against the others. Many regatas gain exactly in the empopadas ones. We must be kind to the tension of escotas and to verify as these they indicate to us if the wind changes of direction or intensity. For example, a turn of the wind of 10º of compass can make us win near 200 meters on a distance of 1,000 meters if the opposite does not notice itself and corrects consequently.

The attack

If we ahead took to a boat ours and to which we wished to pursue, the situation is ideal since in sections with stern wind we are who we received the first wind in therefore we will be able to try to leave without wind the adversary who removes some tens to us from meters. It happens the opposite situation to the fitted ones, where the pursuer takes those to lose.
We will really try “to annoy” to that ours goes ahead covering the wind to him with our own candles. In order to avoid it, the one that goes ahead will trasluchará to take off of the zone of “shade” that creates our candles. The game consists of following to him and to trasluchar continuously after him to continue covering to him and to try to be pushing it towards the edge of the field of regatas, so that when we arrive at buoy we have the advantage exceeds he to go less forced.
But one is not a “match-RACE” like in the America Glass, we do not have to forget that we do not go behind a boat. What we want is to gain regata. Don't mention it will serve to us to gain an opposite if on the other band of the field of regatas 15 boats go much more sent to have better wind in that zone.

The defense

With stern wind and when it persecutes an opposite to us, we must try not to let to us lock up by the pursuer. If for it we must trasluchar, we must do it before we see ourselves under the “shade” of wind of the pursuer.

And if we already are ourselves annoyed by the annoying pursuer who covers the wind to us we must take any opportunity to undo of its ominous influence. We will be kind to a backing of the wind, or to a boat that must cross our trajectory to do a hollow to us and to leave its turbulent wind.
