Unai passes the Cape Horn

Yesterday, 18 of February of 2007, will not happen inadvertent for Unai. With tears in the eyes, to the 20:40 local time, Unai it left by the port band the majestic well-known island like Cape Horn. After as much effort and dedication, Basurko was able to happen to 10 miles to the south of the Cabo. Due to the hard meteorological conditionses and unstoppable showers, Unai tells us that it could not see nothing almost, but only the knowledge that earth piece was there, made him savor the victory of to have surpassed another one more of the challenges of this day's work.

By stern are 9000 miles, crossed without a doubt, by one of the most recondite places of the planet. They have been 36 days of bloody fight against the sea and the wind, that as the same it described to us “To sail in the Pakea these last weeks has been like going mounted in a chain dump: riding liquid mountains pushed by wind that ruge without being able to lower to me and of the authentic demonstration, class and lesson of this so intense nature. The fact to pass the end supposes a little to return to be born, to return to the life. This supposes to have crossed a conditional door by the inclemencies of the time and although still it is much, already we have left back the Cape Horn”.
Ahead they are only 6000 miles until Norfolk North course, Aupa Pakea.

Unai tells us:
“These two last days have been complicated, has been enough wind and even in the end when I passed the Cape Horn, I happened quite fast very and with the wind of the south. I was foresighted and I kept degrees from latitude to spend later and finally I happened to 10 miles towards the south. They have been intense days in which you get tired more”.
“Right now, I have passed the Island of the States have left, it to starboard because I have had wind very hard of the south, with showers more than 40 knots. I am holding course northeastern and I have wind enough: 35-40 knots of the south. I am trying to rest just a little bit. The boat goes fast and stable”.
“Navegué Yesterday fast with three curls and solent. Today when reaching the Straits I am sailing only with solent and even so sometimes lame enough speed. When it finishes dawning and it rests a little,…. to see the wind what says”.
“The boat is more and more light, I, every time with more confidence and with nobler winds, I hope. It gives much pain me that stops Sir Robin because the fight that we had was very pretty”.
“It is the first time that Cape Horn step and was a day yesterday very tuna and length because you never finish arriving but went so fast I passed that it well. At the moment at I passed which it, imagínate the illusion: one comes everything and much to you, much joy at the top.”
“As soon as it changes a little the wave and it leaves a little the sun I will make use of my Genoa and the day needs that it, it will be the day I can fix that it; now it is difficult because there is much humidity and he is everything very wet but, I must myself put to it. I have a quite long list of work and will be entertained the days of little wind”.
“On the one hand, to pass the Cape Horn it is a landmark and it does much illusion to you but only yesterday just when happening the Cabo grew dark and the wind went more to the south still, almost to the Southeast and so the angle was closed enough, it raised 40-45 knots with showers and it give account you that you follow in South 56º and is necessary to go for the north. I abrí candle and I happened through the Island of the States, already after 54º and believe that it is important to leave the sooner 50º and 40º”.
“My exposition is to go by the shortest way, as rapidly as possible and to trim a little to them, but I do not know if it goes if possible. I have 2 options but I am going to see how we evolved from now until the Falklands. Now my preoccupation is the Falklands because the Islands them “have put” just in the middle of the route and right now I am aiming at them and as soon as the wind settles down during the day I will decide if to leave them to port or starboard”.
“That you are following and animating to me, deciros that have been the pear to pass the Cape Horn, I hope that it does the same illusion to you that and…. that we already go for house. I wait for daros more joys. Thank you very much to all”.

Sir Robin, after exceeding Cape Horn hours before Basurko, is sailing towards the Argentine port of Ushuaia to mainly repair to the system of communications via satellite and the car of escota of the greater candle. As it said Sir Robin: “The first time that navegué this end was 36 years ago. Desire not to stop I need but it to have good weather data on board. I lose the third position and I will return to be hunter.”
With this shutdown of the Insurance Saga of Sir Robin, the 60 OPEN Pakea gains a position in the general of the fleet Velux 5 Oceans, now third party, like Southern Man-AGD of the New Zealand Graham Dalton that happens to the fourth position.
Dalton has preferred to sail a little to the south more leaving to port, to its left, the Islands of the States, with a clear trajectory to also pass the Falklands Islands through the east, leaving them by the flank of port of its OPEN 50 To Southern Man-AGD.
Thousand miles more to the north than the Pakea, to 442 miles to the east of the Argentine port of Mar del Plata, of Yukoh sails the Japanese Kojiro with its 60 OPEN Sipirit, to a rate of speed, with an average day's work of 310 miles in you complete 24 hours, in the last part of positions of the Velux 5 Oceans. She is the participant whom more miles it has crossed at an average speed of about 13 knots.
And to almost 550 miles of Ecuador is Bernard Stamm with its 60 OPEN Cheminées Poujoulat, leader of the fleet 5 Velux Oceans, that holds a course more to the north, towards 20º this, to be placed in the best position in the entrance of the doldrums, leaving by port the Brazilian coast of Recife to 170 miles to the west.
