2007

3º Stage

A fast stage with exit delayed because of the storm that affected Norfork. In the end another victory for Stamm, 2º put for Kijiro and podio also for veterado Sir Robin.

After adjudging itself behind schedule first and secondly put of regata VELUX 5 OCEANS to their arrival to the Sport Port of Getxo this, Bernard Stamm and Kojiro Shiraishi have offered a small press conference in the Hotel the Tamarises.

Kojiro has been thankful for to Bernard the advice who Swiss provided before starting off to him of Norfolk, that has served to him, is saying, to do good regata. “I have obtained this 2º put with the friendly support and family and by all means with the aid of my mentor Yukoh Tada, who will be listening to right now my words from the sky.”.

To the being asked on its immediate plans, Kojiro has responded: “I do not want to think at this moment about the future. My desire is to construct a new boat but not yet I have sponsoring. Clear that as Bernard has taught many things to me, I can make an exercise of do-it-yourself work and repair my SPIRIT OF YUKOH.

On the other hand, before the question of how regata has seen this, Bernard Stamm has commented: “I did not divide like favorite in this regata; everything changed from the first moment, nothing else for leaving Bilbao with that one enormous storm… Everything has been different from as we thought that it would go. Than one regata more tactical, this one has been one regata to know how to manage the difficult moments

Stamm has admitted that it is difficult to know to him how regata has seen people one in which 2 important regatistas, Alex Thomson and Mike Golding had to retire. “I do not know very well what people understand of our work. It is difficult to know it when putting earth foot. With more or less competing one regata continues being a competition, in which it is to manage well all the elements; one is strategy, to take care of the boat well, to make the suitable tactical decisions, to anticipate themselves to meteorology….to command not the other way around on the boat and. One is to be always in forward edge and not to lose a minute.

To the being asked on the importance of the quality of the materials of OPEN 60 in the attainment of a victory in one regata of these characteristics, Bernard Stamm has commented that: “all the OPEN 60 are solid, which happens is that the more new they are the boats the less have been able to try, and the boat of Kojiro and mine have tried on or. I had some breakage in the boat, but the experience and the time that I have passed in the Poujoulat have given me the opportunity to be solving all these problems. Anyone can have a one breakage at any time regata like this. In addition it is not necessary to forget that one regata is much strategy.

The Swiss navigator Bernard Stamm is cruzado the line of impact of the VELUX 5 OCEANS in Bilbao to the 17:13 local time (17h13' 25''). The present champion has completed the third and last stage of the VELUX 5 OCEANS on board CHEMINEES POUJOULAT after a transatlantic Sprint that began in Norfolk (the USA) 11 days ago, 23 hours and 53 minutes. The last pioneer, completes the challenge alone

The first man who alone gave to the return to the world without scales Sir Robin Knox-Jonhston finishes 3º in the last stage of the VELUX 5 OCEANS

“It has been my last return to the world alone”

4 of May of 2007. Robin entered third position 3 day and a half after Stamm winner. The sport port of Getxo has been witness of an historical moment in the world of the sport when hundreds of people have given a warm welcome to Sir Robin Knox Johnston, receiving to him like a true hero of the return to the world alone with scales VELUX 5 OCEANS.

Almost 40 years after it became the first man who alone circumnavigated the world without scales in the Sunday Times Golden Globe 1968-69, this wolf of sea of 68 years has returned to make history when completing his second circumnavigation to the world. Sir Robin has become the person of more age than it has completed this classic regata and their natural ability, determination and perseverancia have made of him the best one skipper of the world and they maintain to him in the fight by the third position in podio in the final ranking.

Where others have failed, Knox-Johnston has planted expensive to the adversity. 165 people have only managed to complete a return to the world alone. Sir Robin already was part of this extraordinary club but once again it has put itself on approval. She is more, he is pioneering in navigation alone and began with the passion that still surrounds to regatas like the VELUX 5 OCEANS.  To repeat similar feat for the second time is at the same level of Neil Armstrong when it again returned to the moon or Edmund Hilary climbing to the Everest 40 years later.

Speaking from pantalanes in Getxo, where it was eeted again with his brother, friendly, liking, sponsors and ground equipment have commented: “I am very contented to be in Bilbao. It has been a fantastic welcome. People in the water, pantalanes, everywhere.  Bilbao always has been magnificent from the beginning. For this stage we began together and I have had few problems. At the outset I decided to sacrifice 30 hours more sailing to the north since I did not think in the South route that Unai had taken. But now it has better wind than the one than I had, with wind of the west that brings to him to house. I would like to say to him: Unai, you are my better friend when you are in earth but, oh God, I hate to you in the sea”.

” The technology has been my main problem in the VELUX 5 OCEANS. It would have preferred to do regata of the same form that in 1969. The problem is that now we depend absolutely on the meteorology programs and unfortunately I have not had too much time in the beginning of this project to learn all the necessary one. I would like that there was a normal and simple manual for it. This time has been easier that for 30 years; but it is easier when you have been knowing what can be done, and was not the case for 40 years. Nothing can be compared with the first trip.

It has been my last circumnavigation, I will not return it to do, which is sad. Within four years I will be too old for it. The VELUX 5 OCEANS already has been frustrating reason why fortune teller who in four years would not be sufficiently competitive and would be too frustrating for me. One is regata hard; first you must obtain it, but also obtain it fast.
