It was created in 1978 by Michel Etevenon, and with this edition of 2006, already 7 go regatas in these 28 last years.  In as much time pleasant histories and other tragic ones have followed one another. One treats along with Vendée Globe, of the alone more important race and with more mediatic repercussion of our neighboring country France.

In this regata participates boats of many categories, from trimaranes to monocoques 50 or 60 feet that fulfill regulation IMOCA. In the Route of the Rum they participate from authentic professionals of the world of the candle, to particular landlords, that yes with experience and desire “to fight enough” during some days.

It has never lacked the emotion. In his first edition the arrival was truly of infarct and after 3,510 miles a small one you would trimaran took control of the first position to few miles of the arrival, winning to the favorite that entered by only 98 seconds of difference the second position.

This first transat of the 78 was truly “fresh” to not being necessary to fulfill complicated rules nor ratings for the participant boats which allowed the participation of new and bold prototypes. Rutaje always has been allowed and for that reason skipper they are advised by radio so that the meteo and the forecasts very follow the best routes considering for the next days.

In his second edition already participates 52 sailboats and in which is developed in these days they have cast off 74 boats. A number of participation very enlarged that nothing has to do with regatas like the Velux or the VOR.

The Route of the Rum has known names as exemplary as Eric Tabarly, the Peyron brothers, Poupon, MacArthur, or the unbeatable Desjoyeaux. Navigators all legendary ones. But also tragic disappearances like the one of Caradec took place that never was found in its overturned catamaran.

Little by little the boats have length more and more especially the catamarans and trimaranes, which forces the organization to limit it until the 60 feet from the edition of year 1990. In the first classified edition the first one arrived after 23 days of navigation, but in 2002 east time it was reduced until the 12 days and 8 hours.
