Of the Whitbread to the Volvo Ocean RACE

All the realized attempts previously to organize one regata around the world had been a failure; of the 8 boats that participated in Golden Globe RACE, only one survived the passage by the Cape Horn.

One regata around the world implies ports distributed by all the geography with a suitable technical attendance and of quality. The food supply and the boats require of a considerable investment.

But facing all the impediments, a group of regatistas regata around the world fought to be able to realize the one dream. They outside obtained that to the British Navy, that regata saw in this an interesting form to realize tests of transoceanic navigation, its esponsor. But the true aid came from the hand of the company Whitbread PLC, that not only supported the idea economically it turned but it into respectable and a serious competition. Neither Hill Whitbread nor admiral Otto Steiner could imagine the importance that would have in the world of the candle regata Whitbread

In his first edition, in 1.973 participated 17 boats of different classes. 14 of them were able to arrive at the goal, which was a great success compared with the previous attempts to give the return to the world. The Whitbread is celebrated every four years

With the technical improvements that were introduced in the boats that competed, reached the conclusion, in 1993, of the necessity to create specific boats for this great competition, the calls Whitbread 60. From the past edition it is the unique class of boat that is allowed that it participates in regata.
