The boats of the Volvo Ocean RACE

Which will be the fastest boat? The new rules of regata authorize the development of many new solutions. It is not simply tried to increase a little the length of the VO70. The race is different; New rules, tilted Keels, crew more reduced, smaller number of allowed candles.

LENGTH: 21,50 ms

SLEEVE: 4,70 ms - 5.70 ms

OPENWORK: 4,50 ms

WEIGHT: 12,500 kg - 14,000 kg

WEIGHT OF THE BULB: 4,500 kg (mín)

WARLIKE SURFACE: 812 m2

   Major: 172 m2

   Genoa: 140 m2

   Spinnaker: 500 m2 (máx)

The new VO70 present/display an increase in their length of 10 feet and until a 62% more of warlike surface. There are no restrictions as far as prow candles, unless regata cannot be used more than 24 candles in all the. Pendular keels, all type of ailerons and luffs are admitted, as well as carbon woods and one or two rudders, which causes that these sailboats are much more quick and extreme. They can reach about 25/35 knots, which will reduce in about 21 days the total duration of the race, that until now was of 9 months.

The mast rises more than 30 meters on the cover, with an overall height of 80 feet. Measuring from the keel this it more or less supposes the height of a building of 12 floors! The boats have communication via satellite which will allow them to inform into its situation every six hours.

ABN Love 1 - Holland

First one made the ABN1 projected by Kouyoumdjian, designer who extremely contributes sometimes very controversial novel solutions and. The important thing is that it makes very fast boats as they are demonstrating the first stages of the present edition. It has a little volume less than than the ABN2. Double rudder that improves the control of the boat in the strong lists and in addition increases the security in case of collision of one of them and plows. Two to luff retractable allow to assure the control the boat with the inclined keel. They are of very asymmetric profile with reflex (curve inverted in the ends).

ABN Love 2 - Holland

According to the new rules of regata, if you have two boats, both have to compete. The new ABN2 of Juan Kaouyoumdjian has enjoyed some refinements with respect to first. Slightest differences in the sliding position of the tilted keel, luffs and the curvature in the central zone of the helmet. The most obvious modifications are in the cover in which all the elements have been delayed to delay the center of gravity of the crew in cover.

BRAZIL 1 - Brazil

A powerful boat and certainly apparently seems better adapted for the transoceanic race that stops regatas cuts inshore. Also it has been designed by Farr like Ericsson and the Movistar, but with more curved forms. The rounding of the stern seems to indicate characteristic adapted to any sea disturbance, to the detriment of removing the highest end from speed.

ERICSSON RACING TEAM - Sweden

One is another Farr design very similar to the given one for the Movistar equipment. Helmet of great volume and very flat curves. Designed without commitments fastest and to be created from a negative mold. The unique chosen rudder is deep and of great aspect ratio. Their two sliding luffs (also Canards calls) are the result of deep investigations. Also with displaced tilted keel by two hydraulic pistons to obtain to great wind stabilities cruzados.

MOVISTAR - Spain

It was first in being in the water to begin the training and adjustments. One is a model of the designer Brushes Farr, with high freeboard to protect the bathtub, and extremely extreme in all the elements of design. It has been designed with a single rudder which diminishes the resistance hydrodynamics in front of two wet surfaces. Shortly before beginning the VOR2006, it changed to the bulb keel and the mast to improve the stability. They were able to create a lighter mast and consequently to be able to put more kilos in the bulb, being increased the pair of adrizamiento. As other boats VO70 must two sliding lateral luffs with which create a strong lateral resistance when the keel stops acting, when changing of rake and almost to leave the water to increase the stability.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN - the United States

Another Farr boat, designed to beat all the record of speed and to aspire to gain Volvo 2006. Designed for 10 crew and to only win in weight due to being a person less and to pack therefore less eaten and equipment. Its aggressive decoration delay to be around the circumstances.

PREMIER CHALLENGEN - Australia

His designer Don Jones has created a boat safe, able to accept forts sea disturbance. Possibly he gives that to speak in the rugientes seas of the south to which the Australian equipment is well customary. Its later section wide and is adapted for strong winds. It has a compared important sleeve with the Farr. Its tilted keel allows to correct list itself to the maximum and to take all the power from its extensive warlike plane.
