To construct a Volvo Open70

Greater, fast and with more warlike power. They are a 10% greater than previous Open 60 and nevertheless they weigh the same. The secret is in the massive use of new materials like the carbon fiber until in the wood, or the Nomex a polymer of Dupon that allows to the use of cells in panel of bee of great rigidity and lightness. These material falsifying, especially the carbon fiber is easier to use than kevlar and other fibers since they adapt very well to the forms of the mold which it will leave the helmet.
The secret is in securing to the greater hardness and rigidity with the smaller weight, because the gain in weight can be used completely in increasing the bulb of the keel. This improvement the stability and increases the adrizamiento or what the power of the candles is the same. The less it lists the boat, the more vertical is the wood and therefore this it takes wind, being translated in the more propulsive power much more.
In order to construct a helmet it is possible to be used a negative mold (as the molds of all the life) or to be worked on a helmet carved in foam (as for example white cork or espandido polystyrene). The advantage of this second type of positive molds and that frequently is one-time thus are used for monotypes, is that it exists an important saving of time and money to not to be necessary the manufacture of negative mold from the model concerning the helmet. The own model on scale is the one that is used to as much make the helmet applying the weave layers and resins in the traditional way as in the infusion by emptiness. The great disadvantage is that the positive mold needs a final layer called `to filler' that does the times of finished of the helmet and that comes even though around a square kilo by meters. The difference of weight altogether is of about 70 kilos, that can happen directly to the bulb to gain stability.

ABN2, Ericsson and Movistar are constructed with negative molds. The others have been constructed from final model in positive for reasons of time. As soon as possible it is a boat, more time it is for the adjustments and training.

In order to construct a Open 70 30,000 working hours are necessary, or what is the same, about 8 months to the equipment that carries out the construction. An important part of the work is reversed in the preparation and positioning of different weave fragments on the mold before the infusion, in such a way that the fibers of each weave are aligned as the designer demands. This characteristic is fundamental so that the helmet has the looked for rigidity and can accept the efforts for which it has been designed.

The keels can oscillate 40º to both bands to improve the stability substantially. For it two hydraulic pistons are used that generate great pressures that move and rotate the axis on which the keel is supported. One of the challenges which they have faced the constructors is to assure the watertightness the opening on which all the keel tilts.
